You've bonded with baby at home, but those precious few weeks slip by quickly and it's time to head back to work. That doesn't mean that you have to miss out on the special relationship you have with your baby while nursing. But where to start?
Breastfeeding and Work is this year's theme for World Breastfeeding Week, which runs through August 7th. Unfortunately, many companies in the US still lag behind when it comes to supporting working mothers. Legally you most likely have the right to pump at work. But unfortunately those laws do not necessarily apply to companies with fewer than 50 employees. It's important to speak up! You may be able to work with other breastfeeding mothers in your office or company to change the standard practices and make life easier for all of you.
You're probably going to need some advice when it comes to choosing a pump that will work best for you. It's a good idea to start researching a few weeks before you have to head back to the office. Elena Donovan Mauer at The Bump suggests going right for a double electric pump. It will save you time and just generally make life easier.
Here are some of her other great tips:
- Develop a routine
- Schedule pumping sessions on your calendar
- Get a hands-free nursing bra
- And expect a few fiascos before you really get it
It will take some work, and definitely some getting used to, but you can do it!
